CONVERSATION: Anna Bogutskaya and Harriet Armstrong on Vintage Classics WEIRD GIRLS

  • Burley Fisher Books 400 Kingsland Road London, England, E8 4AA United Kingdom (map)

Please join Burley Fisher Books for a conversation to celebrate the release of the Vintage Classics WEIRD GIRLS, a series of nine books by pioneering female authors that will take you to the depraved, delectable depths of weird fiction. Harriet Armstrong and Anna Bogutstkaya will look back at a century of women writing the uncanny - from Jewelle Gomez to Ottessa Moshfegh, to Marjorie Bowen’s rediscovered gothic classic, Black Magic – and reflect on the resonance of the weird today. The event will be chaired by Orla Schätzlein, Assistant Editor at Vintage Classics.

Harriet Armstrong lives and works in London. Her first novel, To Rest Our Minds and Bodies, was published by Les Fugitives in June, and is forthcoming in French, German, Spanish and Turkish translation. Her short fiction has been published in Granta, Forever Magazine, Kismet, the London Magazine, Heat (Giramondo), the Virginia Quarterly Review, the Georgia Review and elsewhere.

Anna Bogutskaya is an award-nominated writer, film programmer and podcaster. She writes for BBC Culture, the Guardian, MUBI, the New Statesman, TimeOut, amongst others, and has programmed for BFI, Edinburgh and Fantastic Fest and is currently the Head of Screen at SXSW London. She hosts The Final Girls podcast, created and contributes to many others. She publishes the movie newsletter Admit One and has written two non-fiction books: Unlikeable Female Characters (2023) and Feeding the Monster (2024), which was recently nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Long Non-Fiction.
